The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore is a dynamic and innovative government agency responsible for the planning, development, and management of land transport systems in the country. The LTA implements various policies and initiatives to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transportation for residents and visitors alike. Among them is a regulation for every vehicle to have a Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) following the LTA design requirements displayed at the front and the back of the vehicle. This regulation is intended for easy identification for regulation, enforcement, and emergency purposes.
Vehicle license plates contain a prefix, up to 4-digit numbers, and a suffix (one-letter checksum digit). All those components must be clearly displayed on the car number plate design.
To ensure optimal visibility, it is recommended that no additional decorations, fittings, or markings be placed near the vehicle registration number on the license plate, as they can potentially hinder the legibility of the registration number. In a case where the license plate is blocked by any fittings or decorations like wedding decorations, bicycles or a bicycle rack, the car owner must hang another license plate on the vehicle.
For the car number plate design to be LTA approve, the vehicle registration number must be displayed with white lettering on a black background, adhering to the standard license plate format.
However, if you ask your car plate maker in Singapore to make the license plate using a reflective material, specific guidelines apply. For the front license plate, black lettering on a white background is required, while the back license plate should display black lettering on a yellow background.
It’s important to note that if your vehicle is part of a special scheme that requires a unique color combination for the license plate, please refer to the provided examples below by the LTA for the car number plate design, including prescribed lettering and background colors you are obligated to use.
The lettering dimensions for all car number plate design must adhere to the following requirements:
- Letters and digits should be 70 mm in height, 50 mm in width, and 10 mm in thickness.
- There should be a 10 mm space between adjacent letters or digits.
- A 20 mm space should be maintained between a letter and a digit that appear side by side.
- The distance between the nearest part of each letter or digit and the top or bottom of the vehicle license plate should be 10 mm.
- Similarly, the space between the closest part of each letter or digit and the side of the vehicle license plate should be 20 mm.
To better understand the lettering dimension, you can refer to the illustration by the LTA below.

It is mandatory to display the assigned vehicle registration number (VRN) on your vehicle at all times. Failure to do so and to properly affix the vehicle number plates (if applicable) by the specified deadline can result in penalties. Non-compliance may lead to a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment for a maximum period of 3 months. Thus, it’s best to ensure prompt adherence to the LTA license plate requirements to avoid any legal consequences.
